After Islamic forces conquered Córdoba in AD 711, the church was divided in half, establishing a coexistence of Islam and Christianity. In 786, after acquiring a portion of the church, Abd al-Rahman I built the Great Mosque of Córdoba on the same location. It wasn't until 1236, during the Reconquista, that Córdoba was reclaimed as a Christian territory, and the Great Mosque underwent a transformation into a Roman Catholic church.

◦ A Mosque with Images and Murals

Within the tenets of Islam, mosques strictly prohibit any forms of idols, totems, or symbols.
