Petra, known as the \"Rose City,\" was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. This recognition was not only due to its extremely unique landscape but also because the remains left by the Nabataeans are considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.<\/p>\n

In the 1st century BC, Petra served as the capital of the Nabataean kingdom and played a crucial role as a stopover point along the caravan routes of the Silk Road. The Nabataean kingdom thrived on the taxes collected from these caravans and the trade of spices and frankincense. However, this prosperity did not last forever. By the 3rd century AD, the importance of the Silk Road had diminished, and a devastating earthquake a century later destroyed a large part of the city. By the time the Arab armies arrived in the 7th century, Petra had become a ghost town. The local Bedouins kept the lost city a secret for centuries. It wasn't until the 19th century that Swiss explorer Johannes Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab, gained the trust of the Bedouins and was led to uncover the secrets of this \"lost city.\"<\/p>\n

The 1.5-kilometer-long serpentine path is a renowned highlight of Petra. As you walk, you will occasionally see niches carved into the rock walls. These features not only enhance the charm of the path but also demonstrate the advanced water engineering skills of the Nabataeans. They constructed channels alongside the pathway that cleverly transported water over several kilometers directly into the city.<\/p>\n

Up to the Dushara temple, the path is fairly easy, but from there to the monastery at the peak, the real challenge begins! Depending on your pace, it can take 40 minutes to an hour to reach the monastery. The path consists mostly of sandy trails and staircases. If you want to take it easy, consider riding a donkey up the mountain.<\/p>\n

Petra by Night, which only takes place three times a week, receives mixed reviews. With opinions ranging from \"boring\" to \"beautiful,\" supporters on both sides have voiced their opinions. For someone like me who needs to see things for myself to believe them, I must experience them firsthand, or I'll be left with an itch of curiosity!

\nLet's talk about the \"boring\" part first: the event is simply a walk to Al Khazna and through the square, with candle-lit lanterns along the way. People listen to the Bedouins singing and enjoy a cup of hot tea, and that's it.<\/p>\n

Now, for the \"beautiful\" part, you need to take in all the sensory experiences to truly be amazed! Walking at night is a relief from the scorching daytime temperatures. The cool breeze allows you to appreciate the unique terrain, guided by candlelight, more comfortably. The singing in the square and the flickering candles create a mysterious and solemn atmosphere that is absent during the day.<\/p>\n
