During the Kingdom of Tungning, Nanzhou gradually came under its influence. Zheng Chenggong encouraged Han Chinese to migrate to Nanzhou, initiating large-scale farming activities. Throughout the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese government promoted modernization in Nanzhou by constructing transportation facilities, enhancing agricultural techniques, and introducing sugarcane, transforming Nanzhou into a major sugar industry hub. This period saw substantial growth in Nanzhou\u2019s infrastructure and economic development.<\/p>\n

Not far from Nanzhou Station is the Nanzhou Sugar Factory, originally named Donggang Sugar Factory, established in 1920 by the Taiwan Sugar Corporation. To develop Taiwan\u2019s sugar industry, the Japanese government constructed several sugar factories, with Nanzhou Sugar Factory being the southernmost one.<\/p>\n

Built in 1921, Xibei Elementary School was an affiliate of the Donggang Sugar Factory during the Japanese colonial period. Most students were children of Japanese workers at the Taiwan Sugar Corporation. Today, the well-preserved Japanese-style school buildings are used as offices for teachers, the principal's office, and classrooms.<\/p>\n

Built in 1929, Zhang Ancient House showcases meticulous craftsmanship. The builder traveled to Japan, Shanghai, and Spain to gather insights before starting construction. The Baroque style combined with Minnan red brick architecture still catches the eye today. The soaring eagle on the front gate wall exudes the grandeur and taste of a wealthy family. Despite nearly a century of history, the well-preserved Zhang Ancient House, selected as one of Taiwan's top 100 historical buildings, remains a significant cultural asset of Nanzhou Township.<\/p>\n

In such hot weather, a refreshing ice treat is a must! After enjoying Wang\u2019s Noodle Shop, I headed next door to Liu Xia for a mango smoothie. Though the shop is small, it\u2019s thoughtfully designed, with blue and white decor that evokes a craving for ice-cold refreshments. The custom models on the counter are quite distinctive. Most importantly, the fresh mango smoothie was absolutely irresistible!<\/p>\n
