For some reason, every time I arrive at Banqiao Station, I find myself caught in the experience of getting lost. Similar to Taipei Main Station, Banqiao Station is a complex structure where five different transit systems converge, with connections to various transportation options and shopping centers, making it feel like a maze. However, this complexity also underscores Banqiao's undeniable prosperity. In addition to its rapid commercial development, Banqiao is home to several renowned historical sites, such as the Lin Family Mansion and Garden. Experiencing the slow flow of cultural sentiments amidst the bustling urban area is one way to truly appreciate the essence of Banqiao.<\/p>\n

\u25e6 The History of Banqiao<\/span><\/h6>\n

Banqiao was originally the residence of the Paijie community of the Ketagalan tribe. In the 17th century, Han Chinese settlers moved in, gradually establishing a settlement. Goods destined for what is now the center of Banqiao City would pass through the Gongguan Canal, located behind the Lin Family Mansion and Garden. Locals would cut down large camphor trees and place them across the canal to facilitate the movement of people and goods between Banqiao and Xinzhuang, leading the area to be colloquially known as \"Fangqiao\" (Plank Bridge). During the Japanese colonial period, the name was changed to \"Banqiao\" to avoid the similar pronunciation of \"Fangqiao\" and \"Wangxiang\" (which means \"homesickness\" in Japanese), as the latter could evoke feelings of homesickness among the Japanese, making them reluctant to stay in Taiwan.<\/p>\n

01\uff5cBanqiao Women's Union Village's Revival Hall<\/h6>\n

In the 1950s, the Women's Union, also known as the \"Women's Federation, the Women's Union Village in Banqiao Township (now Banqiao District, New Taipei City) to assist the government in resettling military families who had relocated to Taiwan. Completed in 1957, the village comprised a total of 600 households and was well-planned and fully equipped, earning the designation of a model military dependents' village. Located in the Women's Federation, the steel-structured Revival Hall, constructed by the Taiwan Steel Plant under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, is a venue capable of accommodating a thousand people for gatherings.<\/p>\n

As 2024 quickly approaches its end, one of the most anticipated events of the year is Christmas, and there's no official event in Taiwan that embodies the \"Christmas spirit quite like in New Taipei City!\" Located in the Xinban Special District, which features highly convenient five-in-one rail connections and a rare large plaza in the city center, Christmasland has been attracting impressive crowds since it first launched in 2011. It has become a landmark event for the area. In 2017, it was even selected by Harper\u2019s Bazaar, one of the world\u2019s most influential fashion magazines, as one of the \"19 Most Stunning Christmas Trees in the World\" on its official social media platform.<\/p>\n

The Lin Ben Yuan family is one of the five prominent families of Taiwan, having risen to prominence during the Qing Dynasty in Banqiao. It is important to note that \"Lin Ben Yuan\" is not a person's name but rather the trade name of the Lin family. The Lin Ben Yuan Family Mansion and Garden, which has stood for over a century, was originally the family's rented residence during the Qing Dynasty. The mansion was later expanded by the brothers. Despite enduring the ravages of war, the residence has been meticulously restored and now showcases its intricate craftsmanship to the world once again.<\/p>\n

Stepping into the Lin Ben Yuan Family Mansion and Garden, one is greeted by the sight of elegant pavilions that impart a sense of tranquility. The garden, which refers to the courtyard outside the residence, historically served as a place to receive distinguished guests.<\/p>\n

Jiangzicui Riverside Park spans a vast area along the banks of the Dahan River, covering approximately 70 hectares. The park offers a diverse range of facilities, including bike paths, basketball courts, volleyball courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields. Observing cyclists glide along the scenic bike paths made me appreciate that Banqiao is truly a livable city.<\/p>\n

Located near Banqiao Junior High School, the Banqiao 435 Art Zone was formerly the educational center of the Veterans Affairs Council. After the original unit relocated, the site remained vacant for 10 years before being repurposed by the New Taipei City Government. The area has been transformed around two main themes: the \"Parent-Child Art Park\" and the \"Artists' Dream Base,\" where various themed exhibitions are regularly held. This space has become a vibrant hub for citizens to engage closely with arts and culture.<\/p>\n

Behind the exhibition rooms is the eye-catching \"Taiwan Toy Museum,\" which features thousands of toys, from traditional children's playthings to contemporary board games. The enthusiasm of the teachers engaging with the toys matched that of the children!<\/p>\n

Before leaving the Banqiao 435 Art Zone, I was drawn to a particularly elegant neoclassical building. To my surprise, the words \"Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall\" were inscribed on the exterior. It turns out that, in addition to the renowned blue-tiled, white-walled structure in Taipei, there is also a Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall located here!<\/p>\n

After the educational center was transformed into an art zone, the memorial hall was renamed \"Fangqiao Theater.\" However, the inscription \"Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall\" on the building's facade was not removed. Inside the Fangqiao Theater, remnants from the time when the Veterans Affairs Council occupied the site are still preserved. Notably, a banner with Chiang Kai-Shek's handwriting, displaying the motto of the Whampoa Military Academy, hangs prominently above the stage, serving as a poignant reminder of the past.<\/p>\n
