When I visited Gukeng as a student, I came mainly for the thrilling rides at Janfusun Fancyworld. It wasn\u2019t until I grew older and became passionate about pour-over coffee that I discovered how captivating Gukeng coffee truly is. This visit, in particular, completely changed my perception of Taiwanese coffee. Gukeng coffee originates from the Huashan area of Gukeng. Located at 23.5 degrees north latitude, with ideal temperature and humidity conditions for coffee cultivation, Gukeng is one of the few places in Taiwan capable of producing high-quality coffee beans.<\/p>\n

\u25e6 The Past of Gukeng<\/span><\/h6>\n

Gukeng was formerly known as \u201cAngu-keng.\u201d The word \u201can\u201d refers to a thatched hut. Since many of the early settlers came from Nanjing County in Zhangzhou Prefecture\u2014an area with a large Hakka population where place names often begin with \u201can\u201d\u2014the name \u201cAngu-keng\u201d carries the meaning of preserving memories of the settlers\u2019 homeland. During the Japanese colonial period, Arabica coffee was extensively cultivated here. Owing to its exceptional quality, it was selected as a tribute crop for the Japanese emperor, a legacy that later became an important foundation for the development of Gukeng\u2019s coffee industry.<\/p>\n

I visited Janfusun Fancyworld twice when I was still a student. Back then, I was fearless and loved extreme rides like G5 and Sky Tower. Now, just seeing their height in aerial footage is enough to make me break out in a cold sweat. All I can say is that once time and courage are gone, they don\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n

In the past, whenever Janfusun was mentioned, the amusement park was the only image that came to mind. It wasn\u2019t until this visit to Ciguang Temple, when I saw \u201cJianhu Lake\u201d in front of the temple gate, that I finally understood where the name Jianhu Mountain comes from.<\/p>\n

Ciguang Temple faces Jianhu Lake, whose fresh water flows year-round, and rests against Jianhu Mountain at its back. To the west lies the vast Chianan Plain, while the Central Mountain Range stands guard to the east. The entire temple exudes a sense of calm, clarity, and grounded energy. Stepping into the Mahavira Hall and gazing upon the serene, compassionate expression of Shakyamuni Buddha, my own mind naturally began to slow down as well.<\/p>\n

Located not far from Janfusun Fancyworld, Rosahill is one of Gukeng\u2019s well-known attractions. With its well-planned layout, convenient parking, and a wide variety of offerings, it\u2019s easy to see why it draws so many visitors. Rosahill is part of Nice Group\u2019s fragrance brand. The garden is similar in concept to many beauty, skincare, and health supplement factories that are open for tourism, combining a rich use of botanical extracts to create a large-scale, immersive environment.<\/p>\n

Opposite the Twin Hearts Garden is the Tropical Garden Maze\u2014a perfect spot for kids to burn off energy. During my visit, I happened to see parents and children playing hide-and-seek inside; it was irresistibly cute.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re generous with samples, and the staff don\u2019t push sales, so browsing feels relaxed and pressure-free. I personally took home a few bars of essential oil soap. My favorites were the Orange Blossom Honey and Rose\u2014luxuriously foamy, silky smooth, and incredibly soothing.<\/p>\n

Where do you usually go to buy fresh produce? In recent years, I\u2019ve particularly enjoyed visiting local farmers\u2019 association supermarkets. Seeing each town proudly showcase its specialty agricultural products always fills me with genuine happiness for the local farmers! Gukeng, known for its coffee beans and bitter tea seed oil, has a store called Gukeng Good Farmers, run by the Gukeng Township Farmers\u2019 Association. It brings together a wide range of coffee and bitter tea seed oil products, making it easy to explore the local specialties in one stop.<\/p>\n

The staff are warm and welcoming. As soon as you step inside, you\u2019re offered samples of the farmers\u2019 own \u201cGabi Mountain\u201d 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 coffees, as well as bitter tea oil noodles. This strong sense of hospitality left me with an extremely positive impression of Gukeng.<\/p>\n

Located along Neishan Highway, the Gukeng Green Tunnel stretches about two kilometers. Mango trees line both sides, their branches interlacing to form a lush, natural canopy. The route connects wide open lawns, allowing visitors to enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by nature without venturing deep into the forest.<\/p>\n

On weekends, the area often hosts markets, transforming the asphalt road into a leisurely pedestrian space. Honey Museum is located at the entrance of the Gukeng Green Tunnel and has a free parking lot. Even before stepping into the park, I was already charmed by the cute bee figurines at the gate. The park is divided into a theme hall, the Honey Garden Caf\u00e9, and a large grassy area\u2014making it a place that both adults and children enjoy. At the entrance, a realistic giant bee contrasts sharply with the park\u2019s otherwise cute aesthetic, creating an unexpectedly charming effect.<\/p>\n

I personally have a fear of insects, so I couldn\u2019t help but get goosebumps when I first saw a swarm of bees. But watching them work so diligently made them increasingly endearing.<\/p>\n

Paired with their incredibly tasty brown sugar coffee cookies, it was pure bliss.<\/p>\n

The moment you step inside, you\u2019re immediately offered a coffee sample, and after finishing it, they\u2019ll ask if you\u2019d like a refill. Their warmth and hospitality left a strong impression on me.<\/p>\n

Their maple cookies even earned a spot in Taiwan\u2019s Top 100 Souvenirs in 2025, making them a must-bring treat.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t had such a heartfelt bowl of simple noodles in a long time. The sauce is mellow and not overly salty, and the tofu and vegetables are given generously, giving the dish a warm, \u201chomestyle\u201d feeling. The small bowl of wonton soup costs just 25\u202fNTD but comes with six plump wontons. Clearly, the owner really doesn\u2019t want anyone leaving hungry.<\/p>\n
