The Champions Parade, with over a thousand participants, was made up of samba schools from different regions of Brazil. Each competing team had to overcome numerous challenges to earn the opportunity to perform before the judges and the audience. The grand final parade, during which the champion team was about to spectacularly emerge, began at 10 PM and lasted until 6 AM the following morning. It was a moment when I once again experienced the electrifying atmosphere of people collectively immersed in frenzy, reminiscent of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, back in 2012.
At first, I simply enjoyed the lively and festive atmosphere of the celebration. Gradually, I became captivated by the meticulously designed stages, costumes, performances, and surprises. To stand out among numerous top-notch teams, it takes more than just originality in the theme. It requires the ability to capture the attention of both the audience and the judges. This is not just a comprehensive evaluation of creativity and aesthetics, but also a ruthless test of survival amidst visual bombardment and aesthetic fatigue! From mythology, religion, education, to current social issues, each team strives to outshine the others, aiming to secure a special place in the hearts of the audience.
From the darkness of the night to the rising sun, the audience's spirits reached their most exhilarating state. It was at this moment that I encountered the most impactful piece: "Emancipation of the Slaves." Brazil achieved its independence through blood, sweat, and tears. This historical period not only has a significant connection to the origin of the Brazilian Carnival but also led me to reflect on the present situation in Taiwan.
