Egypt ◦ Saqqara|Pyramid of Djoser: The Oldest Pyramid in Egypt

by YU-LING

The Pyramid of Djoser, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Cairo in the Saqqara area, is Egypt's first pyramid.

◦ Pyramid of Djoser

This pyramid was built by Imhotep, who was a true genius of his time. He held multiple roles, including prime minister, high priest, chief judge, doctor, minister of agriculture, and architect. Layer by layer, he constructed Egypt's first pyramid in the year 2648 BC.

The interior of the pyramid is quite simple, with only one passage leading directly above the burial chamber being accessible. The lighting is minimal yet well-designed, giving a sense of sacredness to the burial chamber.

◦ Saqqara: The Vast Burial Ground

Saqqara, known as the "City of the Dead," is an ancient burial site from the time of the Old Kingdom in Egypt. In recent years, there have been significant archaeological advancements, and just last year, five tombs with a history of over 4,000 years were discovered. These tombs contain a wealth of artifacts and well-preserved wall paintings.

The remote location of Saqqara offers advantages that Giza does not have. There are very few tourists, and you can count the number of cameleers on one hand. It is truly blissful to be able to quietly experience Egypt's oldest pyramid.
