Thailand ◦ Chiang Mai | The Night Market Becomes a Sea of Lights

by YU-LING

For Taiwanese people who have grown up seeing numerous night markets, it's not easy to pique our interest in visiting night markets every night. However, Chiang Mai's night market is different. With its strong northern Thai charm, diverse and delicious street food, and unique handmade crafts, has the magical appeal that makes I want to visit again and again!

◦ Sunday Night Market: The Biggest Night Market in Chiang Mai

Whether it's a weekday or a weekend, you can fully enjoy the fun of Thai night markets in Chiang Mai. The top four are Chiang Mai University Night Market, Chiang Khan Walking Street, Saturday Night Market, and Sunday Night Market.

My favorite is the Sunday Night Market, the biggest one in Chiang Mai. It's just as good as Bangkok's famous Chatuchak Weekend Market! This market is famous for cool handmade stuff and unique items you won't find anywhere else. Many vendors even offer embroidery services with names or simple customization, making it a great choice for both gift-giving and personal use.

◦ The Night Market Transforms into a Sea of Lights

However, exploring the Sunday Night Market does require some physical effort. The round trip of 2.5 kilometers had me walking from 5 PM to 9 PM, and I encountered several power outages along the way. When it suddenly became dark, the shop owners didn't seem surprised at all and quickly lit candles. Visitors also illuminated their mobile phone flashlights. In an instant, the entire night market transformed into a stunning sea of lights.
