A friend of mine who works at the Hsinchu Science Park once told me that whenever he needs to clear his mind or reorganize his project, he always comes to Xiangshan Wetlands. Here, he lets his thoughts drift away with the sea breeze and watches the sunset, finding a rare moment of recalibration amidst his daily interactions with endless data. It wasn’t until I visited Xiangshan and walked along the Crab Viewing Trail that I truly understood what he meant. Standing by the shore, I felt Hsinchu's signature strong wind sweep over me. My mind, however, felt instantly calmer, as if everything became clearer. No wonder engineers, who often need to keep their minds running at full speed, find such a place indispensable.

◦ The History of Xiangshan
Across Taiwan, most prehistoric sites are located between mountains and the sea. Well-known examples frequently mentioned in textbooks, such as the Changbin Culture and the Shisanhang Culture, vividly illustrate the deep connection between humans and their environment. In western Taiwan, the Xiangshan area of Hsinchu, where the mountains and sea are closest, is home to the "Shangshalun Site," a significant prehistoric site. It’s no exaggeration to say that Xiangshan was the very cradle of human activity in the Hsinchu region.

01|Old Pot Farm
In the late Qing Dynasty, the Guo family relocated to Hsinchu. With keen observation, they noticed that the region's strong seasonal winds were ideal for air-drying rice vermicelli. This discovery prompted them to start producing and manufacturing rice noodles. Over generations, the Guo family refined their unique techniques, cementing Hsinchu’s reputation as the home of high-quality rice vermicelli. In 1999, Old Pot Farm was officially founded, becoming a key platform for promoting rice-based culinary culture.
At Old Pot Farm, you can sign up for a hands-on rice noodle-making activity. What left the deepest impression on me, however, was watching the live production process inside the factory. Skilled workers swiftly and expertly transformed piles of rice noodles into neat, pristine bundles. Their smooth and efficient movements were mesmerizing.

02|Xiangshan Harp Bridge
Spanning the West Coast Expressway and connecting the coastal cycling path, the Xiangshan Harp Bridge is dedicated exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mangroves and take in breathtaking sunsets.
Even during the busy rush hour, the bridge remains lively. Many photography enthusiasts arrive early to secure the perfect spot, eager to capture the stunning interplay of sunset hues and the trails of car lights below.

03|Xiangshan Train Station
Designated as a municipal historic site, Xiangshan Train Station was completed in 1928. Constructed from Alishan cypress, this Japanese-style building is the only remaining cypress station in Taiwan.
Gazing at the weathered wooden structure, my eyes followed the uniformed students exiting the station and landed on old, timeworn posters on the opposite wall. For a moment, I felt as though I had stepped into a different era, a time and space far removed from the present.

04|Xiangshan God of Wealth Temple
Perched halfway up a hill, the Xiangshan God of Wealth Temple in Hsinchu is dedicated to the Five-Way God of Wealth. Renowned as one of Hsinchu's most famous temples, it is considered a treasure trove of prosperity due to its favorable location, facing the sea and backed by the mountains—a symbol of "sitting on gold and overlooking silver."
The temple is not only celebrated for its efficacious blessings but also as a prime spot for watching sunsets. Standing on the plaza, you can enjoy a stunning view of the sun casting its golden glow over the sea, creating an especially enchanting scene.

05|Xiangshan Tianhou Temple
On my way from the Xiangshan God of Wealth Temple to Xiangshan Wetlands, I was drawn to a small yet exquisite temple. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it was the Tianhou Temple, dedicated to Mazu. Built in 1825, Xiangshan Tianhou Temple boasts a history of 200 years. It is home to a rare "flexible-body" Mazu statue, making it a significant religious center in the Xiangshan area.
Stepping inside the temple, I was struck by the timeless charm of its offerings table, incense burner, and the plaques hanging above. Though marked by the passage of time, these elements have been carefully preserved, reflecting the deep devotion and respect of the worshippers for Xiangshan Mazu.

06|Xiangshan Wetlands
When I arrived at Xiangshan Wetlands and saw the design of the Crab Viewing Trail, I couldn’t help but think, What a brilliant idea! The 250-meter-long trail allows visitors to admire the mesmerizing sight of countless crabs scuttling during low tide, all without disturbing the ecosystem—a thoughtful design that lets people safely explore nature.
In addition to observing adorable mudskippers and fiddler crabs up close, Xiangshan Wetlands is also an exceptional spot for enjoying breathtaking sunsets.

◦ Restaurants and Snacks in Xiangshan
01|Xiangshan Eatery
The moment I parked in front of Xiangshan Eatery, located just across from Xiangshan Station, the rich aroma of duck meat immediately stirred my appetite. The enticing scent alone was enough to make my mouth water. I arrived shortly after the shop opened, and it was already nearly full, a clear testament to its popularity.
Their signature duck noodle, though modest in the amount of duck meat, did not diminish my enjoyment in the slightest. The broth, simmered for hours with vegetables, exuded a natural sweetness, perfectly complemented by the layered richness of duck fat. The contrast between its hearty flavor and refreshing clarity left me savoring every bite.
