TAIWAN 368-07 | Nantou ◦ Yuchih | The Enchanting Homeland of Black Tea

by YU-LING

When people visit Nantou, their first stop is often Yuchih Township, a place blessed with scenic lakes, mountains, and rich culture. Whether by bus or driving along the highway, the journey through the misty Sun Moon Lake and the rolling hills is a visual delight. The shimmering waters and the lush mountains create a mesmerizing landscape.

In Yuchih, visitors are not only treated to visual splendor but also to delightful aromas and flavors. Thanks to Yuchi's abundant rainfall, high elevation, and humidity, the area is ideal for growing black tea, and its sweet fragrance captures the hearts of many.

◦ History of Yuchih

Legend has it that in the late Jiaqing period, a Han Chinese family started cultivating the Yuchih Basin. To protect themselves from indigenous attacks, they built a large moat around their mansion and kept fish in it. They also constructed earthen walls for added protection. This is how the name "Yuchih" originated. In addition to the Han settlers, Yuchi Township is also home to the Thao people. The Thao people from the Sun Moon Lake area consider Lalu their most sacred site. The cultural evolution of this location is closely linked to the Thao.

01|Mao Family Garden at Sun Moon Lake

In earlier times, Mao Xinxiao, known as "Mao Wangye," established Mao Family Garden at Sun Moon Lake. Visitors could enjoy traditional Thao singing and dancing performances, experience the unique local customs, purchase local specialties, and take photos in traditional costumes. It was a well-known tourist spot. However, in the 1980s, the Mao Family Princess Art Troupe disbanded, and the garden was left deserted, leaving many nostalgic.

02|Lalu Island

The old name for Sun Moon Lake was Shui Sha Lian. A small mountain in the lake turned into an island as the water level rose, and the Thao people called it Lalu, believing it to be the sacred residence of their ancestral spirits. During the Japanese occupation, the island was named Jade Island, and a shrine was built on it. After Taiwan's restoration, it was renamed Guanghua Island, and a Yuexia Laoren Pavilion was set up, making it a famous scenic spot.

◦ Attractions in Yuchih
01|Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake is the largest inland lake in Taiwan. Its name originates from the shape of the lake: the eastern part resembles the sun, while the western part looks like the moon.

Often, we are drawn to many attractions by beautifully edited photos, only to find that the reality is less impressive unless we carefully frame our shots. However, Sun Moon Lake is different. Walking along the lakeside trail, you can enjoy different views of the lake from various lookout points. Whether it's the misty mornings or the breathtaking sunsets, the natural beauty is truly captivating.

02|Wenwu Temple

This temple, situated by Sun Moon Lake, is a famous spot that blends historical culture and natural beauty. Visiting early in the morning, the golden sunlight casts a warm glow on the temple's eaves nestled amidst the mountains and water. The lingering mist softens the light, creating a vibrant scene through the breaks in the clouds.

Completed in 1969, Wenwu Temple is dedicated to Confucius, the supreme sage of Confucianism, and Guan Sheng Di Jun, a deity of Taoism. The temple's interior is lavishly decorated, with intricately carved beams and painted rafters, leaving a lasting impression on me.

By watching performances, visiting exhibitions, and participating in interactive activities, visitors can gain a basic understanding of the traditional dances, crafts, and customs of each group.

Among the many experiences and facilities in the park, my favorite is the indigenous song and dance performances.
