Chiayi ◦ Lucao | Rediscovering Simplicity in the Countryside | TAIWAN 368–25

by YU-LING

As we entered the vibrant area of Lucao Township, we were surrounded by art installations featuring deer. My friend and I couldn't help but exclaim in unison, "Lucao is just too adorable!"

This charming little town, situated on the Chianan Plain near the Bazhang River, exemplifies a typical Taiwanese rural village. What does "typical rural village" mean? It means that the relationships between people are particularly close-knit—so close that they can immediately tell you're an outsider:
"Are you students? No classes today?"
"There's not much fun to be had around here, you know."
What they don’t realize is that simply being here—experiencing the lush green fields and the down-to-earth way people live—is far more captivating to me than anything they might deem 'fun.'

◦ The History of Lucao

One of the most common sayings among the people of Lucao is, "Lucao Township has grass but no deer!" However, this phrase contradicts the origin of the town’s name. It is said that in the early days, when settlers came to this area to cultivate the land, they saw herds of deer running across the plains and grazing on the grass in the fields. This led to the name "Luzai Grass" (meaning "Deer Grass").

Today, Lucao's agricultural achievements are widely recognized. The region is renowned for its main crops of rice, muskmelon, and watermelon, with its innovative watermelon grafting techniques being especially noteworthy. These advanced methods have drawn farmers from neighboring townships to purchase seedlings.

04|Gueta Park

The history of the Gueta Tower, constructed to ward off evil, dates back to 1908. At that time, Bitan Village, situated downstream of the Bazhang River, was frequently threatened by floods. To ensure the safety of the villagers, the decision was made to build the Gueta Tower, with the hope of invoking the power of the water god to protect the village. At the top of the tower rests a stone turtle facing the Bazhang River. Its lifelike posture creates the impression that it is attentively observing the river’s flow. According to legend, after the tower was completed and a sacrificial ceremony was conducted, the flooding of the Bazhang River gradually diminished.
