JAPAN ◦ SHIKOKU|Complete Guide to Shikoku Pilgrimage Accommodations

by YU-LING

Compared to other regions of Japan, lodging options along the Shikoku Pilgrimage—especially in non-touristy areas—are relatively scarce. So why did I decide to compile this list? Precisely because it’s less popular and harder to find information. I spent a long time digging through resources before my trip, which inspired me to share these carefully curated accommodations along the pilgrimage route. I hope this guide helps future pilgrims on their journey.

Accommodations are a significant part of the pilgrimage culture. The way guesthouse owners treat pilgrims often reflects the deep respect people in Shikoku have for Kūkai, the founder of this sacred path.

The accommodations are listed in the order of the pilgrimage route: Tokushima → Kōchi → Ehime → Kagawa. Prices are calculated based on solo travelers.

。How to Find Accommodations on the Shikoku Pilgrimage?

The 88 temples are scattered across countryside, mountains, coastal capes, and urban areas. For pilgrims, choosing where to stay follows the same logic as real estate: Location, location, location! In rural areas, you won’t find hotel chains. The best-case scenario is staying near the last temple visited that day or the first one planned for the next day. Another important factor is whether the guesthouse offers one night, two meals. Many parts of the route are remote, with no restaurants or stores nearby—surviving on crackers and energy bars alone can be quite disheartening.

After 45 days of experience, I managed to book all my accommodations using just Google Maps and a resource called Minna no Henro (Pilgrim Accommodations). Here’s how:

01|Google Maps

Estimate how many kilometers you can walk each day based on your pace. Then, map out your daily route from Point A to Point B on Google Maps. Check if there are any bed icons (indicating lodgings) near Point B. Most listings on Google Maps include a phone number, and some even link to a booking site.

02|Minna No Henro (Inn)

This is a wonderfully curated site made by veteran pilgrims. Simply click on “Location” to search for accommodations near any temple. The information is well-organized and incredibly helpful! That said, some of the prices and payment methods might not be up to date, so it’s best to double-check with the hosts when booking.

。Recommended Payment Method

As more people embark on pilgrimages, many minshuku have updated their payment systems. While cash was once the only option, many now gradually accept PayPay, the most widely used mobile payment method in Japan. Among the mobile payment options from Taiwan that support PayPay, I’ve found PXP Pay (全支付) to be the most stable. I highly recommend that pilgrims heading to Shikoku download and activate Taiwan Pay in advance—it will automatically switch to PayPay once you're in Japan, making transactions super convenient!

After registering as a member, use PXP Pay to make your first purchase (any amount, any platform) and receive 50 bonus points!

Review: Cleanliness of the room, bedding, and bathroom could definitely be improved. That said, it’s located right across from Temple 13 Dainichi-ji, and the meals were generous and delicious. Honestly, for this price, I can overlook the leftover leaves, twigs, and pain-relief patches—presumably carried down from Shōsan-ji by the previous guest—and even the unemptied trash bin in the restroom, because the food was that good.

Review: A budget-friendly hostel located in central Kochi, with easy access to shopping. The beds and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. However, it lacks an elevator—so you’ll need to carry your luggage up and down stairs—and the entrance area isn’t fully sheltered from rain. The lounge wasn’t open during my stay, possibly due to low occupancy. Overall, there might be better options in Kochi City.

Breakfast included simple bread and juice, and tea and coffee were available freely throughout the day.

Within a 10-minute walk, you'll find a large Fuji supermarket and a drugstore, making it easy to buy food and daily necessities. The downside is that the facilities are a bit dated, and the rooms are quite small—travelers with large suitcases may find it a bit inconvenient.

The rooms are spacious and come with a private bathroom, toilet, and sink, which means you can shower whenever you like and no need to go downstairs in the middle of the night—fellow pilgrims will definitely understand my excitement! The owner is an excellent cook, and since the guesthouse is located by a fishing port, the seafood is incredibly fresh. Her fish dishes were absolutely delicious. They also offer fishing raft experiences, which I’d love to try next time I return to Ehime. I’d definitely stay here again!

Review: Located about a 30-minute walk from Temple 43 (Meisekiji), this business hotel is also conveniently close—within 10 minutes on foot—to a large Fuji supermarket and a convenience store, making meals and resupplying easy. The amenities here are surprisingly thorough, including items rarely found in other hotels such as mouthwash, interdental brushes, bath salts, and even small snacks. Although the posted price for laundry and drying is ¥770, the front desk staff kindly offered it for free—perhaps because I was on pilgrimage. I was truly grateful for their generosity.

Laundry: ¥200
Dryer: ¥100 per 15 minutes
Payment Methods: Cash, credit card, digital payment
Review: The inn is about a 30-minute walk from the Iwaya-ji parking lot. It’s highly recommended to leave your luggage there first, as the walk from the parking lot to the temple itself takes an additional 20 minutes over steep slopes and stone steps. Dinner and the hot springs are both excellent, and since there are few accommodations nearby, the location is a major advantage. The downside is the weak Wi-Fi signal throughout the building, so streaming videos or large data transfers may take some time.

Review: This place feels like a youth hostel with slightly larger beds. Review: When I first arrived and saw the "Karaoke" sign, I was startled—but it turns out the building has been remodeled into a guesthouse for pilgrims and cyclists. The room was cozy and clean, although the economy triple room doesn’t have a sink, so I had to go downstairs to use the restroom. There’s also only one shower available, which might be a drawback for some. The owner was incredibly kind—she offered to do my laundry free of charge and even gave me rice balls and fruit in the morning. I was truly touched by her generosity; meeting such warm-hearted people on the pilgrimage is a real blessing. Within a 10-minute walk, you’ll find a Sogo Mart and a drugstore, so getting food and supplies is convenient.

In addition to the usual items, they offer face masks, bath salts, body lotion, facial cleanser, and hair conditioner. You can even choose your preferred pillow at check-in—I was so excited I nearly lost control! The hot spring and women-only bathing area are also fantastic.

From 6 PM to 9 PM, they offer complimentary alcoholic drinks—you can even mix your own cocktails using the vending machine!
Breakfast is incredibly generous and varied. The bread was so good, it could rival that of a specialty bakery. Within a 5-minute walk, you’ll find a Fuji supermarket, a sportswear store, and a drugstore, making it easy to grab food or daily essentials.

Review: Located at the foot of Unpen-ji, Minshuku Okada is a top choice for many pilgrims thanks to its ideal location. The restaurant walls are filled with photos that show just how beloved this guesthouse—and the Okada couple—are. After a delicious dinner, Grandpa Okada, who is nearly 100 years old, gave each guest a hand-drawn map, sparking a warm and lively conversation about how to tackle the climb to Unpen-ji the next day. I absolutely loved the sense of community here!

Review: The hostess at Minshuku Aozoraya is incredibly warm and welcoming. It's rare to meet someone who's been running a guesthouse for over 20 years and still treats each guest so kindly. Her cooking is also fantastic—her grilled meat at dinner was so good I ended up having an extra bowl of rice! She even prepared a sandwich for me to take with me in the morning, which was such a thoughtful gesture. The room was clean and comfortable, and the bath had a spacious tub—perfect for relaxing after conquering the challenging climb to Unpen-ji.

However, if you're staying here after Minshuku Okada the previous night, you might arrive a bit early. Many pilgrims choose to continue on to Daiko-ji instead, depending on their pace and preference.
