Spain ◦ Segovia|Acueducto of Segovia and Alcázar of Segovia

by YU-LING

Segovia, located to the north of Spain's capital, Madrid, boasts an old town and an aqueduct, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Acueducto de Segovia is not only the best-preserved ancient Roman relic on the Iberian Peninsula, but it is also an iconic symbol of Segovia. Two kilometers away from the aqueduct stands the Alcázar de Segovia, which gained fame as an inspiration for Disney's castles.

◦ Acueducto de Segovia

Constructed in the 1st century AD, the aqueduct was designed to transport water from a source 18 kilometers away into the town for public use. Astonishingly, after over a millennium, it remains in excellent condition, attesting to the craftsmanship and wisdom of the ancient Romans.

◦ Alcázar de Segovia

The Alcázar of Segovia, perched atop a cliff, is one of the must-see sights in Segovia. This castle, apart from being ranked among the ten most beautiful castles in Europe, also served as a design inspiration for Disney's castles, including Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle. Simply strolling around the perimeter of the castle and witnessing the interplay of light and shadow on its walls offers an unforgettable experience.
