Located in the southeastern part of Taichung, Taiping is the second-largest district in the city. The majority of the area consists of hills and mountains, with altitudes ranging from 60 to 1,200 meters. This diverse terrain provides Taiping with a rich ecological environment and offers people many opportunities to get closer to nature. Due to its suitable soil and climate conditions for growing tobacco, tobacco was once one of the key crops in Taiping. Although tobacco production has significantly decreased today, it still has a certain influence on the area's development.

◦ The History of Taiping
The history of Taiping dates back to the Qing Dynasty when it was inhabited by the indigenous Hoanya people. As Han settlers arrived, frequent conflicts arose between them and the indigenous tribes. Hoping for peace, the area was named “Taiping,” which means "peace." Another explanation for the name comes from the Japanese colonial period. It is said that Japanese soldiers, lost in the unfamiliar terrain, were guided by a local resident. Moved by the harmony of the area, the Japanese commander named the place “Daping.” Both versions of the story reflect the people’s desire for peace and stability.
◦ Attractions in Taiping
01|Taiping Nursery Larch
Located away from the city, the Taiping Nursery is a hidden gem where visitors can quietly appreciate the beauty of bald cypress trees. Every autumn and winter, these trees transform into a vibrant red, creating a picturesque scene against the blue sky and reflecting in the pond.
Although the nursery is not very large, it is thoughtfully designed. A stroll around the pond takes only a few minutes, yet the atmosphere is both charming and peaceful. If you’re looking to enhance your visit, consider exploring nearby attractions such as Jiutong Mountain and Taiping Bat Cave.
Across from the Taiping Nursery stands a magnificent building that serves as a temple for I-Kuan Tao. The impressive hall, with its bright and spacious interior, exudes a solemn atmosphere.

02|Ecological Trail
Long ago, this area was covered with a type of plant from the nettle family. If you accidentally touched its leaves, you would experience intense itching and a burning sensation, akin to a fire burn. This plant was commonly known as "biting dog," and the locals named the area "Biting Dog Pit."
Now transformed into a hiking trail, the number of nettle plants has significantly decreased, making it a friendly and accessible path. Along the route, you can find vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables. On my way back, I enjoyed a sweet yet slightly sour, juicy orange, and the fatigue from the three-hour hike vanished instantly!

03|Taiping Tobacco Market
The tobacco monopoly in Taiwan began during the Japanese colonial period. In 1913, the Japanese government introduced American tobacco leaves as the primary raw material for making cigarettes. After World War II, the Nationalist government maintained the monopoly system. Tobacco farmers were required to apply for approval to cultivate specific types of tobacco in designated areas and were required to sell their entire harvest to the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation. To facilitate this, the Taiping Tobacco Market was built in 1955 as a collection point for tobacco leaves in the Taiping area.
In 2016, restoration work commenced, and the Taiping Tobacco Market reopened in 2018. In addition to highlighting the evolution of tobacco cultivation from the Japanese colonial period onward, the market now features an arts and culture exhibition area, providing local artists with the opportunity to present their creations to the public.
What truly amazed me was the Chen Ting Shih Memorial Art Museum, located on the opposite side of the park. The spacious and bright space displays his works, crafted from scrap iron, which evoke a sense of time passing. The natural light changing throughout the day adds even more vibrancy to Chen Ting Shih’s creations.

04|Taiping Ancient Farm Museum
The owner of the Taiping Ancient Farm Museum had a passion for collecting antiques when he was young. He worried that the memories of the agricultural era would gradually fade as urbanization progressed. As a result, farming tools, furniture, and household items from rural families became his collection.
In 1985, he opened a museum in his home. In addition to showcasing his collection and providing a space for people to reflect on the past, he also organized interactive experiences to help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the work and life in rural communities.
When I saw the Vespa at the museum, it evoked childhood memories, as my parents used to ride one as their main form of transportation!

01|Huale Noodle Shop
Located in Taiping, Huale Noodle Shop is run by a couple who come from families with a background in running food stalls. I especially love their sesame noodles. Not only are the noodles chewy and flavorful, but they are also very generous with the sesame sauce, making every bite rich and delicious.
