For my upcoming journey to South America, I will be entering the Amazon Rainforest in Peru and ascending Rainbow Mountain, which stands at an altitude of over 5,000 meters. To ensure my safety, I registered at a travel clinic, received the yellow fever vaccine, and obtained preventive medication for diseases such as malaria and altitude sickness.
Seeing the self-pay cost of over $70 left me momentarily shocked, but that was just the beginning. What truly scared me was getting the vaccine, as I had heard that it could be painful and cause muscle soreness and discomfort.
When I entered the injection room, the nurse was professional and efficient. Before I could even take a deep breath to ease my nerves, it was all over. To be honest, I hardly felt anything; it was even less painful than getting a blood draw.
The yellow fever vaccine is effective for ten years, and there is even some debate that it may provide lifelong protection. For me, the outcome might just open the door to another decade of exploring Central and South America and Africa!
