Kaohsiung ◦ Cieding | The Hometown of Mullet Roe | TAIWAN 368–20

by YU-LING

Adjacent to Tainan, Cieding is a coastal town renowned for its exceptional offshore fishing grounds and a well-developed harbor constructed from a lagoon. Many residents depend on nearshore fishing for their livelihoods. The highest recorded mullet catch in Taiwan was achieved at Xingda Harbor in Cieding. During the winter mullet season, the streets are often lined with golden mullet roe being sun-dried, signifying the "golden season" for local fishermen.

In recent years, thanks to the proactive development efforts of the Kaohsiung City Government and local revitalization initiatives, Cieding has transformed into a vibrant tourist town known for its abundant seafood.

◦ The History of Cieding

There are three theories regarding the origin of the name "Cieding." Some say it was brought over from ancestral lands in mainland China, while others believe it is derived from a plant name or the language of the indigenous people. Personally, I prefer the explanation that best fits the local environment.

Cieding was once home to the Tapuyen tribe, and the name "Cieding" is believed to be a transliteration of the indigenous word "Cattia" or "Cattea." In the tribe's language, this term combines the characters for "ten" and "fish," signifying "land of many fish." Today, this region, known for its abundant fish, has become one of the most popular fishing harbors in southern Taiwan. Besides attracting tourists to its vibrant fish market, Cieding's rich fisheries serve as an excellent outdoor classroom. Furthermore, the area's deep-rooted religious culture enhances its significant potential for future development.

01|Xingda Harbor Tourist Fish Market

I once visited the Xingda Harbor Tourist Fish Market on a weekend, anticipating a relaxed and enjoyable outing. However, as soon as my car entered the congested traffic, my good mood quickly faded, replaced by surprise: "When did this place become so crowded?" After finally arriving at the market, the once quiet fishing village image of Cieding in my mind vanished, gradually being replaced by that of a bustling tourist town.

Since the 2010 merger of Kaohsiung City and County, Xingda Harbor has been transformed into a multifunctional tourist fishing port through redevelopment and expansion efforts by the Kaohsiung City Government. Besides its traditional fishing activities, the harbor now also handles a variety of aquaculture products. Seafood from the harbor is collected and subsequently distributed by vendors to other regions, establishing Xingda Harbor as the largest seafood distribution center in northern Kaohsiung and the leading producer of mullet roe in Taiwan.

02|Cieding Wetland Park

In the past, the Cieding Wetland was once an inland sea. When the Japanese arrived in Taiwan, this inland sea was transformed into salt fields. During the rule of the Kuomintang government, salt taxes were imposed to increase revenue, which caused salt prices to soar and led to a serious problem of illegal salt smuggling. The "Salt Police Watchtower" is a unique historical relic that emerged from this period.

As the salt industry declined, the abandoned salt fields unexpectedly became a stopover for migrating birds, attracting numerous photographers. Today, it serves as a significant bird-watching site in northern Kaohsiung.

03|Sher Chao Loulan Memorial Hall

This building, with its charming vintage exterior and well-maintained condition, caught my eye. Noticing that the front doors were open, I walked inside to explore. I was warmly greeted by a man who enthusiastically began sharing the story of the memorial hall. The family that built this hall is highly respected in the community. Besides housing the operations of a welfare foundation, the memorial hall also provides a reading space, offering local children a quiet place to concentrate on their studies.

01|Xia Keng Douhua

Originating from Lujhu in Kaohsiung, the 36-year-old Xia Keng Douhua has become a well-known local brand, with franchise locations in areas such as Cieding, Gangshan, Alian, and Dashe. Before my visit to Cieding, a friend who previously lived there shared that his favorite post-basketball treat was a bowl of their rich, smooth douhua.

After trying their peanut douhua, I finally understood why my friend holds it in such high regard. The douhua boasts a delightful aroma, while the peanuts are tender and creamy, delivering a flavor that reflects the care and dedication invested in its preparation—a rare and charming quality in today’s fast-paced world.
