Israel ◦ Tel Aviv | Yafo: The City Older Than Jerusalem

by YU-LING

Yafo/Jaffa is one of the oldest port cities in the world, even older than Jerusalem. The Joppa frequently mentioned in the Bible refers to Yafo. In the past, European pilgrims heading to Jerusalem would land in Yafo.

◦ Old Jaffa

Taking a stroll in the historic city of Yafo is truly enjoyable. In addition to playing water sports on the beach, people also enjoy sitting along the coast and reading when the weather is nice. As I gaze upon the scenery, I can't help but feel as if I am immersed in Western Europe. It's no wonder people often say that Israel is the "Europe of the Middle East."

◦ St. Peter’s Church

Back in the day, the disciple Peter spread Jesus's teachings throughout various regions of Israel. The St. Peter's Church in Yafo is the place where Peter resided. During this visit, I was fortunate to witness the morning prayers, and observing everyone devoutly praying was truly moving.

◦ Jaffa Flea Market

One of the highlights of visiting Yafo is exploring the local flea market! The market is divided into stalls and shops. The shops on both sides of the street sell souvenirs of better quality, but at higher prices.

For real treasures, one must venture into the flea market's vendor area. What may appear as a chaotic pile of miscellaneous items actually conceals many interesting and durable treasures, making it a paradise for those who enjoy treasure hunting in flea markets!
